The head of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs said a majority of Minnesota veterans are not claiming the benefits they have earned.

Commissioner Larry Shellito said many of the veterans may not know they are eligible.

"What I found is a lot of them aren't even sure if they are eligible for benefits," said Shellito. "How you can help us is let them know that they should be checking with their County Veterans Service Officer and see what is actually available for them."

Shellito said many veterans return home, go back to work and start receiving full benefits from their place of employment, and it isn't until they retire that they start looking into veteran's benefits.
