The increasing population in North Dakota's oil patch has hospitals in the area looking at expansion.
Gary Miller, Chief Executive Officer of Bismarck’s St. Alexius Medical Center, said the hospital is seeing an increasing demand for beds.
"We've been full in a number of areas, we've tried to hold patients in the ER while we're opening up in-patient beds, acute beds," said Miller. "We're going to have to seriously look at additional in-patient bed capability as one kind of infrastructure step because of what we're seeing in terms of volume growth in the west. That gets into capital expenditures and the need for additional staffing."
Miller said St. Alexius needs more nursing staff, not only in Bismarck but at its clinics throughout western North Dakota.
Miller said the medical center’s board is talking about what needs to be done to meet demand.
