Fargo Police officers spent much of their time Wednesday responding to more than 80 fireworks complaints.

While fireworks are sold legally in North Dakota, it is illegal to shoot them off in city limits.

Sergeant Jim Kringlie said citations are not usually issued.

"Because of the sheer volume of them, we can't take enforcement action on all of them," said Kringlie. "Most of the time in an incident, an officer will show up, let the people involved know that the fireworks are illegal in the city limits to either own, possess or use, and basically give them a warning. The officer may take enforcement action depending on if they were shooting them at cars or if the officer gets sent back a second time."

Complaints this Fourth of July in Fargo were up significantly from a year ago.

Police were responding to fireworks calls overnight and Thursday morning. In many cases, police make unrecorded stops so the actual number of calls regarding fireworks is considerably higher.
