After three straight years of declines, motorcycle fatalities are on the rise in Minnesota in 2012, and the season is still young.
State Motorcycle Safety Specialist Bill Shaffer said at least 12 riders have died this season, five more than at this time last year.
"Half of the single vehicle-motorcycle crash fatalities this year involved excessive speed," said Shaffer. "Drinking plays a part; two of our 12 fatalities this year it's suspected they've been drinking. Two of our fatalities were another driver failing to yield to motorcyclists."
Shaffer said two other fatalities involved the cyclist hitting animals. One was a deer strike and the other was a rider hitting a dead raccoon on the roadway.
Shaffer urges motorcyclists to slow down, stay alert and avoid alcohol.
