A grassroots group of Fargo homeowners is campaigning for an extension of a half-cent city sales tax to pay for flood protection and other infrastructure needs.
Cole Carley of The Protect Fargo Committee said the group started with homeowners in a cul-de-sac in Rose Creek that is threatened by flooding. Carley said with just three weeks before the June primary, the group has its work cut out pressing for passage of the extension.
"Our message is that the roughly $56 per household that it costs to pay this sales tax is so much less than paying the federal flood insurance, which of course all goes out of town as soon as you pay it, or other kinds of assessments or other kinds types of alternatives," said Carley. "This has the least pain to it and it's got a lot of bang for the buck, so to speak."
So far, the citizens group has raised about $25,000 for a media ad campaign.
