BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Secretary of State Al Jaeger has permission to hire three new workers, but lawmakers aren't happy about his shortened office hours.

Jaeger's office is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. He recently shortened the hours to give employees time to catch up on business registration paperwork.

Demand for business licenses has grown rapidly because of western North Dakota's oil boom and economic growth elsewhere in the state.

A legislative budget committee voted Tuesday to grant Jaeger's request to hire three new workers.

He'll be using $295,000 in operating budget savings for the new employees, overtime payments and pay increases for existing workers.

The committee urged Jaeger to go back to normal office hours. But Jaeger says the shortened hours haven't hurt service to the public.
