A West Fargo man injured in a hit-and-run boating accident in Becker County over the Fourth of July is hospitalized in Minneapolis where he has undergone surgery on Friday.
Terry Erickson is in stable condition. He, his wife, Taryn, two young children and a friend were on Big Cormorant Lake late Wednesday night watching fireworks when their boat was struck by a speeding boat.
Taryn Erickson said it was total chaos.
"I saw this boat coming straight for us," said Taryn Erickson. "And about the same time, my husband looked, he was in the driver seat. My husband jumped up and starts waving his arms and about the same time he yelled to bail."
The adults jumped into the lake. Terry Erickson was struck as he jumped.
The speeding boat went up and over the Erickson’s boat.
The Erickson's two children who were still on board escaped serious injury.
Taryn said the other boat stopped but the three adults on board refused to help them and left as other boats arrived to assist.
Becker County Sheriff Tim Gordon told KFGO News that deputies are still searching for the boat that left the scene.
"At about 10:20 p.m. on the Fourth of July, we had a boat that was occupied by a father and a daughter and it was struck by another boat," said Gordon. "The boat went up and over the transom, which is the rear portion of the boat. It caused pretty serious injuries to the owner-operator."
Eyewitnesses told authorities there were two people in the boat that fled the scene. Deputies spent all day Thursday searching the lake for the boat. Gordon believes those responsible were able to trailer it and leave.
The boat is white or cream colored, with red or dark stripes along the sides with front end damage.
Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious around the public access on the north side of Lake Cormorant in the Viking Bay area Wednesday night or Thursday morning is asked to contact the sheriff's office in Detroit Lakes.
