Better Info On ND College Freshmen Needed

North Dakota's top university administrator says the state needs to provide better information about how well students are doing in their first year of college.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's top university administrator says the state needs to provide better information about how well students are doing in their first year of college.

Hamid Shirvani spoke Thursday at a meeting of North Dakota's Board of Higher Education in Bismarck.

Shirvani says most states report on the academic results of public college freshmen, but North Dakota does not.

He says it's useful in gauging whether students are well-prepared for college. High schools can use the information to improve teaching, and it can help make college remedial education more efficient.

Shirvani says North Dakota's university system already gathers the information, but it isn't reported back to the students' home schools. He says providing the information is one of his goals as the university system's new chancellor.
