PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A man who helped defeat two previous attempts by Hughes County commissioners to raise the county wheel tax says he has collected enough petition signatures to put the fate of another increase in the hands of voters.

David Braun needed to gather 531 signatures to refer the increase approved by the County Commission last month. He says that he has collected about 700 names. The signatures will need to be verified before the matter can go on the November ballot.

The tax increase was approved by commissioners to raise more money for roads and bridges. If it stands, the tax will rise by $2 per wheel, doubling the current rate.
