The North Dakota Emergency Commission has given Secretary of State Al Jaeger the go-ahead to transfer $295,000 from his operating budget to the salary line.

Jaeger plans to hire three people to help with an increasing workload due to North Dakota’s booming economy. Jaeger earlier cut back the hours his office was open to the public in what he described as an attempt to catch up with the work.

"The level of economic activity in North Dakota is way beyond what we were expecting," said Governor Jack Dalrymple, who chairs the Emergency Commission. "This has a very direct and very immediate impact on business registration and licensing. There's just no way to avoid it, there's no way to manage your way around it."

The money will also be used for temporary help and for overtime. The request still needs the approval of the legislature’s budget section.
