More than 20,000 people have signed up to participate in various events during the Fargo Marathon this weekend. Now in its eighth year, events will begin with the Youth Run on Thursday night, the 5K on Friday night followed by the half and full marathons on Saturday morning.

There is every indication this year's event could top last year's record participation of just over 23,000 entrants.

Mark Knutson, Fargo Marathon Director, said preparing details for the marathon starts early.

"Planning for this year’s marathon probably started about two weeks after last year’s marathon," said Knutson. "When it comes to marketing ideas, logos and getting the website ready for registration, all that starts well in advance. Things like the volunteers, that starts about six months out. A lot of the ground work is laid about 10 to 11 months out from the marathon."

Drivers are urged to allow extra time to reach their destinations during Fargo Marathon events Friday and Saturday. A number of roads will be closed and traffic numbers will be higher than usual, affecting travel throughout Fargo.

Affected travel routes are posted at http://www.kfgo.com/fm-headline-news.php?ID=0000007812.

KFGO will have wall-to-wall coverage of the Saturday events beginning at 6:30 a.m.
