BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's congressional delegation says a U.S. trade office in Kazakhstan will remain open and help the state increase exports to the former Soviet republic.
Sens. John Hoeven and Kent Conrad and Rep. Rick Berg say it's important to keep the U.S. Commercial Service operating in Kazakhstan because it's an emerging market for North Dakota.
The delegation says the state has increased its overall exports to Kazakhstan by more than 400 percent since 2000. North Dakota companies exported more than $192 million in goods and services to the country between 2005 and 2010.
Hundreds of North Dakota cows have been shipped to Kazakhstan on Boeing 747 freighters in the last couple of years.
The delegation complained when the Department of Commerce earlier this year proposed closing the Kazakhstan trade office.
