Dickinson, Stark County Want Police Housing Aid

Dickinson and Stark County are cooperating in an attempt to get a slice of $3 million in grants to build housing for law enforcement officers.

 

 

 

 

DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) - Dickinson and Stark County are cooperating in an attempt to get a slice of $3 million in grants to build housing for law enforcement officers.

Dickinson city administrator Shawn Kessel says the city and Stark County could qualify for financing up to eight housing units. Both apartments and homes could be eligible.

Stark County Commissioner Jay Elkin says it's difficult to recruit police officers and sheriff's deputies to southwestern North Dakota because of a housing shortage caused by the region's oil development.

Stark County Sheriff Clarence Tuhy says the joint grant application could help the community of Belfield, west of Dickinson.

Tuhy said Belfield can't hire its own law officer because there's no place for the person to live.
