Law enforcement agencies throughout southeast North Dakota are gearing up for a weeklong heightened DUI enforcement effort starting on Friday, June 8th.

Sheriff's departments from Cass, Steele, Traill, Ransom, Sargent and Richland counties and police departments from Fargo, West Fargo, NDSU, Lisbon and Wahpeton will be part of the stepped up enforcement.

Cass County Sheriff's Corporal Dean Haaland said the state has a serious drunk driving problem so there is a lot to do to tackle the problem.

Last year, nearly half of all highway fatalities in the state were alcohol related. Statewide, there were more than 6,000 DUI arrests in 2011. In Fargo, 1,127 drunk drivers were arrested in 2011, an all-time record.
