Federal prosecutors have filed charges against a Canadian man accused of smuggling American guns across the international border. Shawn Hartnell of Fort Francis, Ontario was arrested during a sting in Grand Forks.

According to a U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security Affidavit obtained by KFGO News, Hartnell told undercover Canadian detectives last April that he could provide fully automatic assault rifles for $4,000. He told the investigators, who were acting as buyers, that the guns could be brought into Canada from the United States by snowmobile.

Investigators met Hartnell Tuesday at a Grand Forks Hotel and paid him $24,000 for four semi-automatic rifles and two handguns.

Hartnell is facing three firearms, conspiracy and interstate commerce-related charges. At least two other people are believed to be part of the conspiracy.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nick Chase says the case remains open. Chase says it's still unclear whether Hartnell could face separate charges in Canada.
