Mayor Dennis Walaker says Fargo lost the Costco store to West Fargo because local liquor dealers opposed it over concerns about competition.
Walaker, a member of the city liquor control committee, told members Costco approached Fargo first, but the company built in West Fargo because Fargo's off-sale ordinance is more restrictive and puts Fargo at a disadvantage.
Fargo prohibits liquor sales in the same location as grocery stores. Costco, a wholesale warehouse which sells liquor, opens in West Fargo in less than two weeks.
