A freshman student shot himself in the side of the face Thursday morning at the school in Fairmount, N.D. south of Wahpeton.

The boy pulled out a handgun during an algebra class while the teacher and eight students were in the classroom. He was first taken to the hospital in Breckenridge and later transferred to Fargo. He is expected to recover.

The school, with about 110 students in kindergarten through 12th grade, was placed in temporary lockdown.

Richland County Sheriff Larry Leshovsky says no threats were made toward anyone else in the school.
