A rash of deck fires caused by careless smoking has Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen concerned and looking for a way to prevent the fires

Since April, nearly 40 smoking related deck fires have occurred. Most have been at apartments.

He says fortunately, there have been no deaths or injuries but dollar losses are mounting, now near $500,000.

Dirksen says some options being looked at include building code revisions that may require fire resistant materials be installed in older buildings any time the owner applies for a city permit.

Another option could be a surcharge against a property owner who has a fire caused by careless smoking.

Dirksen emphasizes the discussion has only begun and the city will bring property owners into the decision making process.
