The City Utility Committee has recommended city commissioners hire an engineering firm to design expansion of the Fargo water treatment plant. The 17-year old facility is capable of producing 30 million gallons daily. City Adminstrator Pat Zavoral says the expansion would increase that to 45-million gallons daily.

It's hoped to have the project completed by the end of 2015.

A significant share of the $63 million cost involves installation of reverse osmosis equipment. That will make the plant more capable of handling water from Devils Lake that's high in sulfates. the Fargo plant periodically draws water from the Sheyenne river that is being used as a channel to siphon excess water from Devils Lake.

The state will pay 50% of the cost. The remainder would be paid through utility fees, sales tax and possible cost sharing with other cities that may be supplied with Fargo water.
