A man with 27 drunk driving convictions becomes a free man Friday after serving three-years in prison.

Danny Bettcher, 59, New York Mills has served multiple sentences because of his drinking problem.

For years, DWI laws in Minnesota did not require significant jail time, unless someone was hurt or killed. That's why many of Boettcher's previous sentences had been lighter.
