Rev. Jackson Says Son Chose Health Over His Job

The Reverend Jesse Jackson says his son, U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Junior, wanted to hold a press conference to talk about his resignation but did not think he could do so without ``breaking down.''

 

 

 

 

CHICAGO (AP) - The Reverend Jesse Jackson says his son, U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Junior, wanted to hold a press conference to talk about his resignation but did not think he could do so without ``breaking down.''

Speaking to reporters Wednesday evening, the civil rights icon says his son resigned earlier in the day because he did not think he could do his job and regain his health at the same time.

He says his son decided to concentrate on getting better.

Jackson has been largely out of sight in recent months as he has been treated for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues at Minnesota's Mayo Clinic.

He is also under federal investigation.

The elder Jackson says his son's condition will take time to treat, but that he's confident he will recover.
