Grand Forks, N.D. (AP) University of North Dakota officials say safety Erik Mersereau has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules and athletic department policy.
The senior from Port Washington, Wis., has started five of seven games this season. He has 23 tackles and one interception. He has returned 10 punts for a 4.3-yard average.
Mersereau would have ranked among the nation's best in punt returns last year with an 18.2 average per try, including a 79-yard touchdown against Idaho. He didn't have enough chances to qualify.
UND Head Coach Chris Mussman says the team will continue to review Mersereau's status.
