WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) - The deaths of two Watford City teenagers in a violent crash has the city's mayor calling for state officials to do more about traffic problems in the booming western oil patch.

Mayor Brent Sanford says thousands of trucks are traveling on two-lane highways, and local residents are afraid to venture out. He calls it "an absolute horror story."

State Transportation Department spokeswoman Peggy Anderson says the state spent $50 million on U.S. Highway 85 improvements in the past two years and plans to spend another $300 million to convert the stretch between Watford City and Williston into four lanes.

Seventeen-year-old Hank Allen and 18-year-old Austin McCaulley died Tuesday when the vehicle they were riding in slid on ice, collided with a semitrailer and split in half.
