Group Pushing Bismarck Civic Center Expansion

A group of Bismarck hotel owners wants to put a measure on the November election ballot to expand the Civic Center.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A group of Bismarck hotel owners wants to put a measure on the November election ballot to expand the Civic Center.

The project would include a large multipurpose room, more meeting rooms and exhibit space, a kitchen facility and a new west-side entrance. Businessman Bill Shalhoob said the idea is to turn the facility into more of a meeting center.

The expansion would be paid for through an increase on the tax on liquor sales and hotel reservations. The group will take its proposal to the City Commission on June 26.

Mayor John Warford says the city has had a plan for expanding the Civic Center for several years but it's been on hold. He says the cost might be as high as $50 million.
