N.D. Engineer Says Missouri River Dredging Needed
North Dakota's state engineer says some dredging is needed on the Missouri River in response to last summer's flooding.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota's state engineer says some dredging is needed on the Missouri River in response to last summer's flooding.
Todd Sando says the river's channel has narrowed in spots south of Bismarck. He says dredging could help prevent new flooding and ice jams during the winter.
The Army Corps of Engineers has to give permits for dredging.
Some residents of riverside neighborhoods are pushing for removal of sandbars that block their access to the river. Residents of those neighborhoods have to pay for that dredging themselves.
Sando says last year's flooding left a great deal of sand in the river bed near Bismarck. He says it could also affect the ability of irrigators to draw water from the Missouri.
