Ignition Locks Being Added To S.D. Sobriety Program

Ignition locking devices are being added to a statewide program aimed at keeping convicted drunken drivers in South Dakota away from alcohol.

 

 

 

 

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Ignition locking devices are being added to a statewide program aimed at keeping convicted drunken drivers in South Dakota away from alcohol.

The devices that go on vehicles and prevent a person from driving if they have been drinking were tested for six months in South Dakota weather conditions. Attorney General Marty Jackley on Wednesday said the devices proved successful during the test that involved 10 offenders in Lincoln County.

The devices are being added to South Dakota's 24/7 Sobriety Program, which enables alcohol offenders to stay out of jail as long as they remain sober. The program also uses other testing methods such as alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelets and urinalysis. Jackley says officials expect the ignition locking devices to be available by fall.
