ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A Minneapolis SWAT officer is charged with third-degree assault, for allegedly punching another man in an Andover bar and seriously injuring him.

Minneapolis police Sgt. David Clifford was charged Monday. According to the complaint, Clifford told police he was sitting near the victim's table and took offense to some language the victim was using.

Clifford allegedly went to talk to the victim, identified by sheriff's officials as 34-year-old Brian Keith Vanderlee, and punched him.

Anoka County Sheriff's Cmdr. Paul Sommer says video surveillance shows Vanderlee fell backward and may have hit his head on concrete.

Vanderlee was on life support Monday after two brain surgeries.

The name of Clifford's attorney was not immediately available. The Anoka County Jail does not accept messages for inmates.
