ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is taking aim at Republicans for trying to torpedo President Barrack Obama's programs, instead of helping to solve the nation's problems.

Rybak spoke Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

He said Republicans "sat on their hands and played politics" during the nation's economic crash.

Rybak says he was raised Republican.

But he said he didn't "recognize a once-proud party that's been hijacked by extremists and driven off the flat earth they pretend we're living on."

Rybak is the only Minnesota Democrat scheduled to address the convention this week.

He was one of the first Minnesota leaders to campaign for then-candidate Obama before the 2008 Iowa caucuses.
