ND Oil Tax Restructuring Measure Meets Opposition

Education and public worker groups are opposing a plan to restructure oil taxes in North Dakota, saying the measure could impact funding for schools and employees.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Education and public worker groups are opposing a plan to restructure oil taxes in North Dakota, saying the measure could impact funding for schools and employees.

Republican Sen. Dwight Cook told fellow members of the Senate Finance and Taxation Committee on Tuesday that his proposal is an attempt to bring stability to the oil industry and the state.

The measure closes some loopholes for the oil industry in exchange for lower tax rates beginning in 2017.

North Dakota Education Association spokeswoman Kayla Pulvermacher says the cost of education is increasing but the measure would decrease taxes on the oil industry.

North Dakota Petroleum Council President Ron Ness says most of his group's membership supports the measure.

He says oil companies want predictable tax rules to keep drilling in the state.
