Backers of the Fargo-Moorhead Diversion project will get their first chance to convince lawmakers to restore funding for the project when they testify before the Senate Appropriations Committee. The committee takes up the Water Commission funding bill this week. Amendments to the bill, approved by the House last week, includes language that no state funds could be used until Federal funding for the project is assured. Supporters say that could kill the project.

Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner supports Fargo flood protection, but the Dickinson Republican says there are plenty of questions that need to be answered.

Wardner says "I believe we need to make sure Fargo is taken care of..we do not want to have Fargo flood. I do not want to see a situation like Minot or Grand Forks because Fargo is an economic generator for North Dakota."

The bill will be heard Friday morning.
