The Moorhead City Council has voted to deny a five year contract extension to The Bridge Company, a private group that owns and operates the north side toll bridge.
Under terms of the original agreement between the cities and the bridge company, the contract runs out June 1. That would allow the bridge to become public and the $.75 toll would end.
Monday night, the Moorhead City Council also voted to negotiate a buyout price with the bridge owners. Councilman Mark Hintermeyer says if a sum can't be agreed to, it's likely the issue will end up in court. The issue is complicated because Fargo approved a five year extension of the contract two years ago.
Bridge Company owner Kip Moore told KFGO News if the cities take ownership, they would be responsible for outstanding debt of about $500,000.
