An ex-bookkeeper for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America's Northwestern Minnesota Synod is accused of embezzling more than $600,000.

61-year-old Robert Larson of Wolverton, Minnesota has been charged with felony check forgery and theft of corporate property. Court documents say the money was stolen between 2004 and December, 2011.

Clay County Attorney Brian Melton says much of the money was used to pay for improvements to Larson's home. Melton says it’s probably the largest embezzlement case in county history.

If Larson is convicted, he faces up to 100 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. His first court appearance is scheduled for March 19th.
