Ruling Not Expected To Spark Election Day Stumping

A former North Dakota Republican chairman says a court decision isn't likely to cause a burst of Election Day campaigning.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A former North Dakota Republican chairman says a court decision isn't likely to cause a burst of Election Day campaigning.

Gary Emineth filed a federal lawsuit to challenge a North Dakota law that bans campaigning on Election Day.

On Wednesday a federal judge blocked the law from being enforced.

Emineth says the ruling means he'll leave up his campaign yard signs, and he'll be doing some political advocacy on Election Day.

Normally that wouldn't be legal.

But Emineth doesn't expect the ruling will bring about a lot of Election Day campaigning during this election.

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says he'll now be asking the Legislature to repeal the law that bans Election Day campaigning.

He says instead, lawmakers could restrict campaigning near a polling place.
