Between 2007 and 2010, as the recession plunged many into financial hardships, the number of people appyling for food support under the SNAP program grew by more than 50 percent in Minnesota.

In the farm bill, there are cuts to the SNAP food program which could result in nearly 40-thousand Minnesotans losing their food support. Senator Al Franken says a lot of people need the assistance and he doesn't want to balance the budget on their backs. He wants a robust school lunch program and wants the SNAP program to be adequately funded.

Under the Senate bill snap funding would be cut by four-billion dollars over the next ten years. The House has proposed 16-billion in reductions, but it has not yet brought its bill up for a full vote.
