New Tax Rules Good For Local Businesses

New rules taking effect Junes 1st will raise duty free limits for Canadians shopping in the U.S.

A wave of cross-border shopping this summer not seen in 20 years will unleash after new rules take effect June 1st which raise duty free limits for Canadians shopping in the U.S.

That has the attention of North Dakota retailers.

Rusty Papachek, General Manager of West Acres Mall, said this change will be well received by frequent Canadian shoppers.

"We're excited about the change and I know our Canadian friends north of the border, the ones that come down here quite frequently, they're very happy that the law in changing," said Papachek.

Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitors Bureau President Cole Carley said surveys show most Canadians come here just to shop.

"Any advantage that the retail visitor gets, especially if they're from outside the United States in being able to take back duty-free goods is outstanding," said Carley. "That means more money in local hands, more money in the pockets of local retailers."

Next month, Canadians can return home with $200 of tax free goods, up from $50. That number jumps to $800 for stays of more than two days.
