Bismarck Crime Rate Increases In 2011

An annual report shows the crime rate in Bismarck increased more than 6 percent from 2010 to 2011.

 

 

 

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - An annual report shows the crime rate in Bismarck increased more than 6 percent from 2010 to 2011.

The majority of the jump came from an increase in property crimes, such as thefts from vehicles and burglaries.

Police Chief Keith Witt presented the data as part of the department's annual report.

Witt called the jump "very alarming," but says it's increasing along with Bismarck's growth.

Property crimes jumped nearly 20 percent from 2010 to 2011.

Personal crimes, like assault, decreased 25 percent. Within that category, though, forcible rape increased 70 percent. Witt says he did not know what caused the increase in that category. Nationwide, forcible rapes are believed to be underreported, so the chief says that more people could be reporting than before.
