The head of the University of North Dakota's Alumni Foundation said their efforts paid off Tuesday as voters decided UND can drop the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

Tim O’Keefe said while the question has been resolved, there is a need to do some healing as a result of the drawn-out battle.

"The athletes, the coaches, the academic core have not changed," said O'Keefe. "This is a difficult matter. It has been painful for everyone. I hope we can begin to pick those pieces up and try to put things back together again as quickly as possible."

O’Keefe said it was an unusual battle because both sides were acting in agreement that the name and logo were something to be proud of, but when you are being put out of business, there was no other choice.

The vote sends the matter back to the N.D. Board of Higher Education, which is expected to retire the nickname and logo.
