University of North Dakota nickname supporters are challenging statements being made that keeping the nickname will hurt the university and student-athletes.
In what is billed as an official statement from the Committee for Understanding and Respect, the group says it resents "fabricated distortions" designed to create public fear in support of the Fighting Sioux nickname. The statement goes on to say that the same people who embraced the name and traditions for 80 years are now attacking the nickname.
The statement acknowledges public fatigue over the issue. In reference to a recently announced campaign by the UND Alumni Foundation to retire the nickname, the committee said truth and principals are ideals that do not need a $250,000 publicity effort to sell.
Voters will decide whether to allow UND to retire the nickname next month.
