FARGO - A California man is accused of submitting more than a million dollars in false Medicare claims to a Fargo-based insurance company.

A 13-count federal indictment says Robert Olie was associated with a medical supply company that submitted the claims to Fargo-based Noridian Administrative Services.

Federal prosecutors in Fargo say Olie filed Medicare claims for power wheelchairs, but instead provided patients with cheaper electric scooters. Olie is also accused of filing claims for wheelchairs that were medically unnecessary, or refused by patients.

Prosecutors say 152 fraudulent claims worth $1.1 million were submitted. Noridian paid out $450,000.

Olie is also charged with stealing the identities of at least three doctors to carry out the scheme.
