Organizers of the annual french fry feed in Grand Forks will try once again tonight to set a new world record for the largest single serving of french fries.
The event is part of the Potato Bowl activities held each year to recognize the spud industry in the Red River Valley. The goal is for local residents to gobble down more than 2 1/2 tons of fries.
Ted Kries of the Northern Plains Potato Growers Association says the North Dakota-Minnesota potato growing region is the third largest in the U.S., and this year's crop quality ranges from fair to good.
The fries served at tonight's feed run through a conveyor belt that dips them into 140 gallons of hot oil. In addition to the fries, 120 gallons of ketchup will be on hand for dipping. The current record was set one year ago at 5,010 pounds of french fries.
The event begins at 4:30 p.m. in University Park.
