FARGO - The Farm Service Agency is preparing to launch a formal damage assessment survey on crop losses across North Dakota, which can be a long process.
The assessment is the first step in seeking a Federal disaster declaration.
Dale Ihry, with the FSA’s state office in Fargo says they won't have a full picture of the drought's impact until this fall.
The governor requested the USDA to begin the assessment a week ago. A disaster declaration would make federal dollars and other disaster assistance available to farmers and ranchers with crop damage.
The US drought monitor shows more than 50% of North Dakota is experiencing drought conditions.
