The Environmental Protection Agency has reached agreement with a Red River Valley construction company for alleged violations of the Clean Water Act.
Gowan Construction of Oslo, Minn. will pay $40,000 to settle the claim.
The EPA said an inspection of a Gowan construction site on Interstate 29 near Fargo in 2010 discovered unauthorized stormwater discharges into the Sheyenne River.
It is estimated that 1,100 tons of sediment entered the Sheyenne.
The EPA said Gowan and the North Dakota Department of Transportation failed to maintain stormwater controls.
As part of the agreement, the North Dakota DOT has agreed to inspect active construction sites and develop a website devoted to stormwater management.
