Sixteen counties in North Dakota have been declared agricultural drought disaster areas.

The designation makes farmers and ranchers eligible for disaster assistance and other programs should crop damages become greater. Seven counties are on the primary list from the United States Department of Agriculture. Those counties are Barnes, Cass, Grand Forks, Griggs, Nelson, Steele and Traill. Nine contiguous counties would also qualify.

Damage assessments will be completed in the fall. That could lead to an expanded disaster declaration if crop damages become more widespread.
