COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) - An Aug. 1 sentencing has been scheduled for a North Dakota man convicted of shooting and beheading a North Dakota State University researcher.

Daniel Wacht faces up to life in prison without parole in the death of 54-year-old Kurt Johnson. Johnson was last seen alive outside a Cooperstown bar on New Year's Eve 2010, and his severed head was found in a crawl space in Wacht's basement about a week later. His body has not been found.

A jury in April convicted Wacht of murder. Prosecutors said during the trial that Wacht killed Johnson in an attempt to start a white supremacist group. Wacht's attorney disputed that.
