Former N.D. Governor Ed Schafer said he thinks people are beginning to see the reality of rewriting the state constitution to get rid of property taxes.
Schafer, speaking on behalf of opponents of Measure 2, says removing local control is not a good idea.
"As I travel around North Dakota, I think there's been a shift," said Schafer. "Initially people were saying, 'I won't have to write a check for my property taxes? I'll vote for this.'" I think there's been a fundamental shift as the information has gone out. People have had a chance to study the measure, understand it a little more to say this isn't a good idea. I think it's shifting, but elections aren't done until elections are over."
Schafer, a Republican, and former Democratic Lieutenant Governor Lloyd Omdahl are urging a "no" vote on Measure 2 in the June primary. They are representing the group "Keep It Local North Dakota," made up of citizens, businesses and associations opposed to the amendment.
Schaefer and Omdahl were both guests on KFGO's "News and Views" Thursday morning.
