Minn. Man Sentenced In Synthetic Drug Death

A 10-year prison sentence has been given to a 22-year-old Minnesota man who pleaded guilty to third degree unintentional murder.

 

 

 

 

ANOKA, Minn. (AP) - A Minnesota man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for providing a synthetic drug that killed a 19-year-old at a Blaine party last year.

Twenty-two-year-old Timothy LaMere expressed remorse Tuesday and said he wished he could turn back the clock.

In March, LaMere pleaded guilty to third-degree unintentional murder.

Trevor Robinson died at a hospital after taking the drug, identified as 2C-E, at the March 2011 party. Ten others who took it also became ill.

The case spurred calls for tougher laws against synthetic drugs. Federal prosecutors also put pressure on local prosecutors to seek a tough sentence.

The U.S. attorney's office had told Anoka County prosecutors that it might pursue federal charges, which could carry stiffer penalties, if a deal wasn't reached.
