WEST FARGO, N.D. - The West Fargo City Commission has denied a man's request to allow constrictor snakes as pets.

Robert Butts has an 8-foot long python and 4-foot king snake.

The proposal came about when Butts took one of his snakes out for a walk in Elmwood Park. Police were called, and he was told the snakes were illegal in West Fargo. He went to the city commission, but was denied his request to change the ordinance.

West Fargo City Attorney Brian Neugebauer says public fear may be part of the reason the law is in place.

Pet Smart in West Fargo had been selling constrictor snakes, but has been informed by West Fargo police they can't have them.
