The historic Kirkbride complex in Fergus Falls, Minn. may be facing demolition, but it has become the star of the new film "Geist."

Despite protests, the city council unanimously agreed in May to draw up plans for tearing down nearly everything at the former regional treatment center.

Fergus Falls gave film director Eric Dunn the green light to shoot the movie in December. Production was not expected to be done until next year, but because the building might be torn down, Dunn started work now.

"The building itself is a star for the film because its got an appearance, its got a feel to it," said Dunn. "We wouldn't be in Fergus Falls if this building was not here."

Dunn called the gothic-like complex a goldmine for shooting film and said he could make three more movies at Kirkbride without using the same location.

Dunn is using local residents as extras in the film, described as a psychological thriller.

Shooting should be completed by the end of the month.
