S.D. Teachers Union Seeks Public Vote On Bonus Bill

Members of South Dakota's main teachers union have submitted petition signatures seeking a public vote aimed at blocking Gov. Dennis Daugaard's plan to give bonuses to top teachers and phase out tenure.

 

 

 

 

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Members of South Dakota's main teachers union have submitted petition signatures seeking a public vote aimed at blocking Gov. Dennis Daugaard's plan to give bonuses to top teachers and phase out tenure.

The South Dakota Education Association turned in an estimated 30,000 signatures Monday, nearly double the 15,855 valid signatures needed to refer the measure passed by this year's South Dakota Legislature to a vote in the November election.

Daugaard says the measure will help boost student achievement. But teachers argue the bill would do little to help students while diverting attention from the need for additional state aid to school districts.

If state election officials determine that enough valid signatures were submitted, the law will be suspended until the result of the November vote is known.
