Prosecutors want a federal judge to approve another round of psychiatric exams for Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Fargo filed the motion in response to defense claims that Rodriguez was insane and mentally retarded when he kidnapped and murdered Dru Sjodin.

Federal prosecutors are seeking permission for its own experts to examine Rodriguez. If approved, Rodriguez will be examined by an independent neuropsychologist and a forensic psychiatrist in July and August.

Prosecutors say the results may be used to dispute defense attorneys’ claims that Rodriguez is not mentally competent to be put to death.

Rodriguez is on death row at a federal prison in Indiana.
